The Tornado of 1986

When Faith Carried Us Through: The Tornado of 1986

Where were you on March 10, 1986?

What began as a normal Monday morning at Mount Auburn Church quickly became one of the most memorable and defining moments in our church’s history.

Around 1:45 p.m., an F3 tornado struck the church property while the Daycare was in session. At the time, approximately 130 young children and 20 teachers and staff members were in the building.

What happened next is remembered by many as nothing short of a miracle.

A Tornado Drill That Saved Lives

Earlier that day, the Daycare had conducted a tornado drill. During the drill, the children practiced moving to a designated safety area, just as they had done many times before.

Minutes later, when the tornado sirens sounded and the storm touched down, something remarkable happened.

The tornado destroyed the very area of the church where the children had gathered during their drill earlier that day.

Instead of returning to that location, the caregivers and teachers made the decision to shelter in place, keeping the children where they were.

Because of that decision—and what many believe was the protective hand of God—the outcome was extraordinary. Out of all the children and staff present that day, only three children and one teacher suffered minor injuries.

A Building Lost, but a Church Unshaken

The tornado caused devastating damage to the building. The Daycare classrooms and church facilities were a total loss and could no longer be used.

But even in the aftermath of destruction, the church community came together and continued its ministry.

During the rebuilding process:

  • Worship services moved to Center Grove Middle School
  • The Daycare temporarily relocated to Maple Grove Elementary School

Despite the challenges, the congregation remained strong and hopeful.

Reopening on Easter Sunday

After months of rebuilding and restoration, Mount Auburn Church reopened its doors on Easter Sunday in 1987.

For many in the church community, that day symbolized not only the reopening of a building, but also a powerful reminder of God’s faithfulness and protection.

A Legacy of Faith and Care for Children

The events of March 10, 1986 remain an important part of Mount Auburn Church’s story. They remind us of the importance of caring for children and trusting God even in moments of uncertainty.

Mount Auburn Church and Daycare continue to hold closely the words of Jesus found in Matthew 19:14:

“Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.”

That truth continues to guide the church’s mission today as it serves families, children, and the community.
