Celebrating Our Missionaries: Dr. Pauline Chambers

Dr. Pauline Chambers was a member of Mount Auburn Church, and a practicing pediatrician in Greenwood when she heard God’s call to be a missionary.

Pauline explained in her own words: “If I had not been teaching the high school church class, I might never have become a missionary. It was while I was teaching a series of lessons on the mission of the church that I recognized the call of God to offer myself as a missionary. I was already 34 years old and not a surgeon. I expected, and actually hoped, that I had made a mistake, and the Board of Missions would not accept me. But they did and here I am!” Pauline was sent to Piper Memorial Hospital in Kapanga, Republic of Zaire in 1965. She served over twenty years in Africa.

Pauline passed into eternal life on November 25, 2009.

The people of Mount Auburn so cherish the memory of this beautiful servant that in July 2011, the newly refurbished children’s ministry area was consecrated as the Chambers Celebration Center, and affectionately called “The Chambers.”

As we celebrate 200 years, we are also celebrating our church’s unwavering heart for Missions.  You may know that we (YOU!) support local and global missions each year, that scores—probably hundreds—of Mount Auburn youth and members have served on mission trips, and that we have sent out several individuals into the mission field.  However, you may not fully appreciate the breadth of God’s faithfulness through our congregations’ missions involvement.

Have you served in missions? We want to hear from you!

Over the next twelve months, we plan to highlight persons who represent a direct connection to God’s work in the mission field, and Mount Auburn missionaries in particular.  We have a very long list, but since SO many members have been involved in missions, will you please help us make sure we don’t miss someone?  Please contact Susan Porter (Missions Committee Chair) at missions@mountauburn.church if you are a missionary sent out from our congregation or who retired into our congregation.  Please also let us know if you went on a Mission Trip, or if you have a connection to missions that we should share with the congregation for God’s glory.
