For decades, the sound of handbells has been part of worship at Mount Auburn Church. What began as a youth music ministry in the 1980s has grown into a tradition that has connected generations of musicians and worshipers through the years.
As we celebrate 200 years of Mount Auburn, we look back on a ministry that has brought people together through music, service, and worship.
A Youth Ministry on the Move
In the 1980s, Mount Auburn purchased a full set of handbells that were played by a youth handbell choir. The group regularly participated in worship services, but their ministry extended beyond the walls of the church.
The youth handbell choir traveled to several locations across the United States, sharing their music with others. Many of these memorable road trips also included a youth vocal choir, bringing contemporary worship music to audiences along the way.
For many students, these experiences became a meaningful part of their time at Mount Auburn and an important expression of youth ministry.
Growing the Handbell Ministry
In the early 1990s, Mount Auburn expanded its music ministry by purchasing handchimes for an upper elementary choir. Soon afterward, an adult handbell choir was formed.
As interest in the youth handchime program gradually declined and composers began incorporating handchimes into their handbell arrangements, the adult choir began using both bells and chimes in worship.
A decade later, colorful Kristal Bells were added for preschool and elementary-age ringers, creating opportunities for even younger children to participate in music ministry. Many members of the congregation may remember hearing these young musicians during Christmas worship services.
Ringing Into the Future
Today, Mount Auburn’s handbells, handchimes, and Kristal Bells continue to be used as part of the church’s worship life.
The church is especially grateful for Karen Hetrick, whose dedication and leadership have helped keep the handbell ministry active and meaningful through the years.
As we celebrate Mount Auburn’s bicentennial, we give thanks for every child, youth, and adult who has shared their musical gifts through this ministry. From worship services and Christmas celebrations to road trips across the country, the sound of handbells has become a cherished part of Mount Auburn’s story—and continues to ring on today.
