Music has long been an important part of worship at Mount Auburn Church. In fact, records show that by the late 1800s, the church found it necessary to add choir chairs, confirming that a choir was already an established part of worship life.
It is likely that singers gathered near the altar even before designated choir seating was added. What we do know is that for well over a century, choirs at Mount Auburn have helped lead the congregation in worship through song.
Generations of Worship Through Song
For well over a century, women’s, men’s, and youth choirs have all contributed to worship at Mount Auburn. Through special music, seasonal programs, and weekly services, generations of church members have shared their God-given gifts with the congregation.
One of those faithful singers is Gary Bruce, who continues to sing in the choir today after nearly 70 years of participation. Like many others throughout Mount Auburn’s history, he has used his musical gifts to help lead worship and bless the church family.
A Rich Musical Heritage
The hymnals found on Mount Auburn’s shelves offer another glimpse into the church’s musical history. Congregational singing has long been an important part of worship, bringing people together through beloved hymns and songs of faith.
With the support of the choir, along with talented organists and pianists through the years, these moments of worship have helped generations of believers express their praise and devotion to God.
For the past 25 years, Mount Auburn has also been blessed with an orchestra that complements the choir during special services and celebrations, adding another dimension to the church’s music ministry.
Faithful Leadership Through the Years
Mount Auburn’s choir ministry has been guided by many dedicated directors. In the early years, these positions were filled by volunteers, while more recent decades have seen dedicated leadership supporting the ministry.
Many current members of the congregation remember the leadership of Matt Kaufman, Carol Koenig, Bil Danner, and Kari York. Today, Karen Hetrick serves as choir director. With her wide range of experience, the choir is able to present musical selections that complement and enhance Sunday worship.
Continuing the Song
Psalms 95 and 100 encourage believers to sing unto the Lord, and throughout its history, Mount Auburn has remained true to that conviction.
As Mount Auburn celebrates 200 years of ministry, we give thanks for the many choir members, directors, accompanists, and musicians who have shared their gifts through the generations. Their dedication has helped make music a lasting and meaningful part of worship at Mount Auburn, continuing a tradition that has blessed the congregation for more than a century.
